I want you to pay close attention for a few minutes because what I’m about to share with you will help you blast that stubborn belly fat, skyrocket your strength and energy and transform you into the version of yourself that you deserve.
Before we do that I want to share with you a bit about me. I own a successful, six figure training business where we help hundreds of clients each year to get in shape and create a better life for themselves, physically and mentally.
I built this business on my own, from the ground up in the middle 2010, the heart of the biggest recession the country has seen this side of the 21st century. I have helped hundreds and hundreds of women online and in my gym achieve fitness success.
During that time I was pushing myself mentally. I was working 12-15 hours each day, building the business, training clients and learning the ropes of management, leadership and continued business growth.
Let’s revisit that again. It was the winter of 2011 and I had been so busy running my business and even though I was keeping up with my training I knew I wanted to take it to the next level. I hired a coach, got my calories all dialed in and my workouts planned for me.
This was great. I loved the direction, the motivation and the structure. Being a Type-A personality this was exactly what I was craving. Just give me the system and I’ll run with it.
Here’s a little secret about me too. I am not always happy with my body. I have been an athlete all of my life, but I am hard on myself and I was a future based thinker. “When I lose this fat I will feel happier.”
In fact I was miserable. I was married to my food tracking, my workout logs and lived for my cheat days. I was in such a calorie deficit, trying to maintain my 135 pound frame (which by the way, had NO muscle, but I’ll get to that in a minute) that I literally could not function each day without at least a 60 minute nap.
I lost all of my zest for life. I didn’t go out with friends and I found myself even avoiding get togethers if they didn’t fall on my cheat day. About that cheat day too. I would literally make a list during the week of what I was going to devour when that glorious day finally came.
My energy was in the tank, my desire to continue to build my business and inspire and lead my team was absolutely gone. I had nothing to give to anyone else.
I lost 15 pounds but I did not have any muscle. I couldn’t do a pull up to save my life (this was one of my favorite exercises). I was tired and drained at the start of every workout.
Then something happened that I know you can relate to. That weight that I lost, it started to creep back on.
Now as a fitness professional and fat loss coach, what I would tell my clients is that they need to take care of their bodies, not starve into a deficit every single day and they need to actually eat more.
I began eating less. I went into another 200 calorie deficit and was eating about 1100 calories per day. Still rocking that cheat day though, mind you. Still tired, drained, no sex drive, no desire to hang out with friends or do fun stuff with my boyfriend.
The less I ate, the worse I felt and the more my life seemed to just pass me by each day. Stressed, tired, overwhelmed and totally unhappy.
Because I felt SO bad when I could only eat those allotted 1100 calories, I started fasting so that I could eat them all in just two meals. I would stop eating at 6 or 7pm and then not eat until around noon the next day so I could enjoy something more than just a 200 calorie “snack” for each meal.
I would NEVER tell my clients to do such things, but I thought I could beat the system (the system being my body). The truth is, your body is so much smarter than you could ever imagine.
What was happening to me (and has probably happened to you, at least once) is that your body is going into starvation mode. See, we have an enzyme in our body that I like to call our “Skinny Gene.” This enzyme, properly called, AMPK does the following:
“AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) plays a key role as a master regulator of cellular energy homeostasis. The kinase is activated in response to stresses that deplete cellular ATP supplies such as low glucose, hypoxia, ischemia, and heat shock. It exists as a heterotrimeric complex composed of a catalytic α subunit and regulatory β and γ subunits. Binding of AMP to the γ subunit allosterically activates the complex, making it a more attractive substrate for phosphorylation on Thr172 in the activation loop of the α subunit by its major upstream AMPK kinase, LKB1. AMPK can also be directly phosphorylated on Thr172 by CAMKK2 in response to changes in intracellular calcium as occurs following stimulation by metabolic hormones including adiponectin and leptin.”
Here’s the cool thing which I’ll explain exactly how you can do it in a minute, the Skinny Gene, AMPK, actually helps your body burn fat when it’s turned on by exercise. You have to do… Read more…
